Overview

Shot peeing 001

Our customer is a surface preparation company that specialises in surface engineering for aerospace, automotive, motor sport and medical applications.  Many of their customers are UK based however their larger customers include Formula One and they supply directly to the largest aerospace manufacturers.

Their main speciality is shot peening using equipment manufactured exclusively for their unique application and the very precise components that they engineer.  Some components of the peening machinery are made in-house.

The customised peening shot that Ervin developed for us has improved our peening process and saved us considerable wastage and cost.  We believe some of our competitors may be conditioning the media to shatter the shot containing internal defects which could incur even higher costs.

Challenge

Cat2 10

The customer was buying peening shot from a competitor company and experiencing high levels of abrasive wastage.  This was due to reclassification before using it for the first time, by applying the specification for in-process media (AMS2430) to ensure fractured and miss-shaped particles were removed before use.

Up to 35% of the new peening shot was discarded before use, driving a very high consumption.  The rejected material was recycled into low grade steel, incurring smelting cost in addition to the increased costs associated with storing & transportation of the waste, labour and general reduction in operational efficiency.

Solution

We listened carefully to what the customer was asking for and worked with them to develop and test our solution.”  Adam Twose, Ervin Sales Manager, UK.

Discussions with the customer focussed on the specification for “in-process” peening shot, in particular the parameters for roundness, and defects (joined particles, clusters and cracked particles).

Ervin developed a customised peening shot specifically to meet the in-process specification which was quickly approved by the customer for an agreed programme of testing and approval.

Result

Cover sandwell case study

The initial results from the testing suggested a significant drop in wastage to 10% could be achieved, unlocking a significant potential for reduced abrasive consumption and landfill costs.  The customer then asked if it would be possible to make the sizing range even tighter than the AMS specification.  After discussions with the Ervin manufacturing team, this was achieved, delivering a much more efficient peening process.  The customer quickly approved Ervin abrasive for use and regular monitoring shows that wastage has been consistently at or below the 10% level predicted by the trial.
